I don't think so. I think what's happening is that the people who make six figures from middle American things like car dealerships, franchise ownerships, small real estate empires: those people are online now. And they were always committed to an aristocratic view of America.

The press ignored those people, in favor of, to be frank, coastal elites. Nobody thought of someone in Wisconsin who makes six figures. But they exist, they have enormous control over local elections and press, and now they have a national voice.

I'm skeptical. Different subset. Hippies did not become yuppies; they were slightly different people. Though many of the pioneering hippies had had cultivated bourgeoisie upbringings. And late PMCs were not complacent, had lived through pre-Clinton recession.
