I'd be curious to read more about the notion of risk-aversion in cultural consumption.

I love his movies but I think it’s possible to see them as stylistic preening and built on a high-brow snootiness. I think that gets under people’s skin.
-
To see them as nothing beyond twee affectation, droll japes created between sets of croquet and lawn tennis.

A Blockbuster rental of Royal Tenenbaums was one of the most searingly memorable art things of my teen years. It was just sooo uniquely singular. Yeah, it's less singular now. But that's art; it's good that that voice has a place to put out more art. Not everyone is Harper Lee.

Felt similarly watching Nomadland. I want Chloé Zhao to have the opportunity to get to produce more art in her voice. If that voice becomes familiar to everyone over time, that won't make it less singular.

Agree. I don't love all of his stuff, but he also makes absolute gems.

The AV club used to have a Hatesong feature where they would get people to talk about a song they really hated, and it always ended up that it was the people they associated with the song they hated, not the actual song. Except the David Lynch one
