The Long Goodbye has always been Chandler’s best, to me; one of my favorite novels period. Re-reading it now for the nth time but the first since 2005 or so, am surprised to find it larded with unnecessary scenes, flabby prose, weird tonal creep toward Waugh, even Wodehouse.
