I really don't get why it's so disliked. Most cinematic SF is pretty bad, and this is actually pretty good. I'd even call it great if it wasn't for that ending.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz's Cleopatra (1963) is better than most people realize. It certainly was more popular. But it cost too much to make.

I've seen it said that the characters in Lynch's Dune genuinely feel like people from another planet and that's a hard agree from me. In that way I think it makes Star Wars look prosaic.
