If I'm reading Jon Kay correctly. He thinks the 4 negative reviews of Chapelle special are proof that most critics lie. I wonder what he'd make of even wider gap between critics/audiences for Grandma's Boy & nearly as wide gap for Adams Family 2.pic.twitter.com/Lvj3NPXVQs

It's possible that critics secretly love movies like Grandma's Boy & Adam's Family 2 but keep quiet because they don't want to be shamed by colleagues or friends. but that seems less likely than that people who watch many, many movies have different tastes than casual viewers.

Bottom line here is that Kay is looking at an aggregation of 6 reviews (4 negative, 2 positive) and making claim that "most professional film/TV/book reviews" are lies. That's a dingbat claim. Alas, Kay, not a dummy, has let ideology rot his good sense.pic.twitter.com/KKTKoHwxqZ

33% is also way higher than 16% and 26% (especially given much more reviews for movies as against only 6 for Chapelle). Critics and audiences often disagree, for reasons that are pretty obvious in a moment's reflection.

Imagine being the kind of person who watches a movie or comedy show and then immediately goes to score it on Rotten Tomatoes

The much stronger argument here is that professional critics may be out of touch with audiences (for a variety of reasons), but the thing with culture war brainworms is that they convince you it's not possible for an opinion not aligned to your own to be sincerely held

I mean, I’m sure that’s a real phenomenon he’s describing, but in this instance I bet there’s much more ideologically motivated reviews in the audience scores.

Literally the first two reviews I saw when I went to RT right now and clicked to see user reviews. The second one says "not his best" but gives 5 stars because "cancel culture bullshit"pic.twitter.com/wDYnQB0IDr
