I get the sly rhetorical nature of the question, but the actual answer is: It depends upon the extent of political organization and ideological intensity. And how one periodizes the crisis.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1446526661885890570 …

What happens in a polity that is gridlocked, a polity that can't meet fundamental crises with policies that popular majorities want?

Well, I think the record of American history is that the system of intentional gridlock is good at keeping big issues off the table (slavery pre 1860, unregulated capitalism pre-1932) for decades until crisis + organizing overcome.

That’s what I’m saying. It’s hard to know whether it’s 1835 or 1859 when you’re living thru it.

I think we're at about 1845 right now. 10 or 15 years from when gridlock gives way to one side or another.

Maybe. We’re certainly not at a point yet when a critical mass of people move beyond their quotidian concerns to mobilize either at the level of state power, community, or workplaces.

I think the combination of climate rising in urgency with the continued fact of gridlock preventing necessary action will produce a crisis.
