1/ The responses to this are completely fascinating. We have a situation in which the Guardian, Slate, and other outlets chose to cover a controversy while eschewing basic journalistic standards centered on trying to figure out what happened. Instead, they stoked a conspiracyhttps://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1446491174747914245 …

isn't that kind of a distinction without a difference? "This bad guy reported things more accurately than these media outlets" vs "this bad guy, who is bad because of X, Y, Z, reported things more accurately than these media outlets"
-
It reads to me that he was saying specifically that that distinction does make a difference so if you think it doesn’t and want to ask a question about that you should be more specific about what you want to know.

Wouldn't this make Jesse's point all the more striking? What does it say that if he characterized Ngo to your satisfaction that he still was more honest than the media? Talk about focusing on the most irrelevant aspect of this whole debacle.
-
One wonders why Singal didn’t mention the things that would “make his point so striking” - that Ngo is a Nazi collaborator, not a journalist. Weird Singal left all that out when it would bolster his point so well!

This is the least important part of the story. Yes, Ngo sucks as a journalist. If you don't know it, you'll learn fast enough. Jesse was maybe a bit gentle with his wording but so what? Nobody who follows these stories doesn't know what Ngo is about.
-
Plenty of people "don't know what he's about." That's the point Jeet and many others are making and that Jesse's obfuscating, which is his MO.

If he had done that to your liking you would find a different reason to deflect from the actual substance of his point. Why not entertain his actual point?

Literally the entire point of the article is that Andy Ngo really sucks and still somehow did better journalism than you did.

Somebody as awful as Ngo should not have been the one to break the story, that's the point. By not addressing weaknesses, we leave openings for bad actors to take advantage of them.
