2. This is right: the Facebook used in North America (last graveyard of disintegrating Boomer mind flares) is an anomaly to how company functions in Rest of World: as a public utility run by a private oligarch resistant to public responsibility https://twitter.com/mikeduncan/status/1445380945218002953 …

3. The two big Facebook stories of the week (the whistleblower & the outage) are really the same story, both reinforcing the fact that Facebook is a company of wide social effect which is resistant to public concerns. Not to defend Facebook here but, if WhatsApp becomes a country's communications infrastructure, it seems like a government let its people down badly...
-
Or perhaps citizens are using Whatsapp to hide from their government

The outage is a great argument for why WhatsApp in particular needs to be spun back out of Facebook.
-
I don't understand how this outage demonstrates anything like that. Is the claim that a more strongly regulated/broken up Facebook would have fewer outages?

For a lot people in a lot of countries the only way to communicate is by WhatsApp. It's time we stop treating an app that is a lifeline as a throwaway. Maybe we should move it under VOA which is funded by the U.S. Government through the U.S. Agency for Global Media.

Public utilities fail. Private companies pick up the slack. Socialists angry that private companies aren't then public utilities.
-
Facebook should do the right thing and just cut off the rest of the world from their services so they can rely on properly regulated public utilities instead. Don't have access to a landline? Sorry, no Facebook for you. Problem solved!
