In one North Carolina county, teachers can be fired for failing to present American founders as "heroes to our culture". There is no off-ramp on anti-CRT legislation highway. It is a one-way ticket to insanity. https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/education/article254657192.html …pic.twitter.com/9o2ItCf3dl

Can you please explain what is wrong with that in terms of the substance. I get your point but, don't we want the founders portrayed to K-12 in that type of positive light?

I prefer not to teach children that rapists, slave owners, génocidaires should be uncritically praised. You obviously disagree.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing. I am trying to find out the purpose of teaching children the "truth", since the truth is always contextual based on how people want to spin it. I understand the point of teaching children that the founders were great as nations are built on that

so teaching kids that a bunch of genocidal slave owners were good people is the “correct” thing to do here, from your point of view? on the basis that it helps to uphold the white supremacist principles this country is founded on? that’s what we should do?

type of mythology. What is the point of teaching them they were horrible. Dismantle the country? These approaches, whichever one you prefer, are not neutral and people pretend that they are.

So teaching the truth about the founders means the country will be dismantled? in you opinion what holds together the country is the myth that the founders were heroes and good people? Interesting.

On the other hand John Brown must be celebrated as one who used foundational documents (Declaration) for reform. No badmouthing folks.

I think 12th graders are old enough to understand complexity, nuance, and a history that includes heroes and not so admirable moments. (Not just 12th graders, but requiring 12th graders to learn only uncritical praise is especially absurd.)

But we don't admire Washington & Jefferson as people. We admire then for their achievements. What benefit do we get from knowing they were bad people. I love Miles Davis but he used to beat his wife. Now what? Knowing that fact hasn't changed the importance of his music.
