Right, this is the problem with Shor/Cohn/Yglesias/etc. They see these very complex, nuanced trends in US politics, and they immediately attribute them to obscure shifts in the political rhetoric - or, worse, policy platforms - of the parties.https://twitter.com/socio_steve/status/1443935911952142337 …

There are a lot of assertions of causality in that thread.

Obama was also just an immensely skilled politician who looked great on TV, gave thrilling oratory, exuded empathy and smarts, and generated strong media coverage this way! His celebrity was immense!https://twitter.com/EAlluia/status/1443938910753771523 …

One of the most obvious explanations for Obama having some relative strength among the white working class is that there was the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression going on and Democrats had the more working class friendly posture.

What is the better explanation? "Obama was popular among low-education white working class voters because he was a compelling celebrity with a generally glowing media presence," or "Obama was popular among low-education voters because his policy agenda downplayed immigration"

As someone who was alive during the Obama years, the idea he was seen as "pandering to the views of conservatives" merits a solid "lol"https://twitter.com/davidshor/status/1443939508613955615 …

I don't really think it was policy views specifically as much as it was that he and the people around him saw pandering to the views of conservatives as a core part of his job while Democrats who came after him did not. https://twitter.com/davidshor/status/1442580899892244483 …

Like take a second and think about how regular people actually encounter political info. Are they aware of the party's specific policy platforms or careful rhetorical feints and thrusts? Again, as a person who has talked to people, I can tell you the answer is "no"

Most people encounter political info through a bunch of brief and inconsistent interactions with news reports, on social media, random conversations. There are massive information bottlenecks. Detailed signals from the parties AREN'T GETTING THROUGH CLEARLY

So what does get through? Atmospherics, excitement, celebrity. The better you project that stuff, the more you can push through those information bottlenecks into people's day-to-day lives. Obama, as a genuine celebrity, was good at it!

Bernie's pretty good at it too - he has a brand, everyone knows what he's about. But you know who was the all-time champ at this? Donald Trump! Whatever else it did, his clownish reality-TV thign was absolutely consuming. You could not escape it for YEARS.

And whaddya know, some of the same low-engagement, low-education people who liked Obama over Romney, Bernie over Clinton, also liked Trump over Clinton.

I mean voters have consistently chosen the candidate perceived as an outsider going back to Carter with very few exceptions. Democrats defined Trump as a crank reality show host but for most Americans he was a prime time billionaire whose name was synonymous with success.

Trump 2016: "I'm an outsider who is going to shake up Washington!" Clinton campaign: "Trump is an outsider who is going to shake up Washington!" Yeah, that response was a problem.
