One of the things that bugs me about the “easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism” quip is that capitalism has been the dominant form of economic life for two centuries, and even Marx understood the link between capital, industrialization, and modernity.

Of course it’s easier to imagine the end of the world! Because “the end of the world” means, in a very real and concrete sense, the end of industrial modernity.

Yes, yes, I know the origin of the quote is a critique (which I agree with!) about capitalist realism, but it’s taken on a life of its own in the context of the climate crisis.
