Any recommendations for reading on the legal history of the ownership of comic characters? I always thought that the publishers assumed legal ownership of anything in their magazines. I know Image was founded because artists and writers were fed up with this relationship.

That's pretty much how it went. The idea that it wasn't is the result of decades of comic creators who felt they got a raw deal after comics exploded in popularity.

I know the Jack Kirby estate had to fight tooth and nail to get the physical art he drew, Bill Finger’s estate only recently won a co-creator credit for Batman, and Siegel and Shuster weren’t making any money on Superman until they started a PR campaign.
