I think there are basically two major types of straight Shakespeare movie adaptations today. The lush Branagh model or the Orson Welles black and white model of his Chimes at Midnight and Macbeth. This is clearly in the Welles tradition.

I thought Justin Kurzel’s “Macbeth” was extremely underrated, in spite of the screenwriters having taken some liberties with text. The intelligence of the direction and performances was startling, and made for what is easily my most overwhelmingly intense cinema experience.
