So reading this James McWhorter column, I was sympathetic to the argument that Fredric Marsh's life needs to be seen holistically & that the university should restore his name on buildings. But this whitewashing of a 1919 frat called the Ku Klux Klan is absurd & dishonest.pic.twitter.com/3gBKD24375

yeah, that characterization of the rise of the second klan is pretty tendentious. birth of a nation was a national phenomenon and and klan-inspired groups emerged very quickly in its wake

Yeah, the literal argument is that we shouldn't assume any racist intent in 1919 frat called Ku Klux Klan that was created 4 years after the most popular movie of that era came out celebrating first Klan and 2 years before formation of second Klan. All just a coincidence.

Perhaps But why are left activists spending their time like this instead of building a movement to make urgently needed changes in peoples' lives? And March was a hell of a fine actor

I think you're confusing "leftist activists" with the Wisconsin Union Counsel. I suspect very few people other than John McWhorter think this is a matter of national import.

But why waste time and political energy on these symbolic issues that allow McWhorter et al to make campus leftists look silly? Names on buildings are low-hanging fruit; the real nourishment lies in building the power to curb climate change, advance econ equality, and more

I don't begrudge McWhorter writing about this -- it's actually good to have these public debates. But I think his attempt to argue that KKK naming for frat could have been innocent mistake does damage to history. But I agree with larger defense of Marsh.

Meh, I'll begrudge him for writing dozens of variations on this same article over and over again while also insisting that the far right is simply too powerless to pose a meaningful threat to liberal democracy.
