obviously the US has lots of problems and hang ups itself. but we’ve got a bunch of problems as a world right now but along with everything else it’s clear these fmr imperial powers haven’t worked through this stuff.

Not quite. Macron certainly sees France as a great power, but he has toned down imperial nostalgia (making amends in Algeria & Rwanda, for example). That said, France remains a major Pacific power (certainly more so than UK), with a quarter million citizens and a huge EEZ.

But AUKUS does seem almost perfectly designed to annoy les français – and electoral politics demands Macron stand up for the French end (though recalling the ambassador is a tad melodramatic).
