No article at hand unfortunately, but AFAICT there are two main reasons: 1. Angela Merkel was popular with way more than traditionally conservative people. She was elected by people far into leftist circles, last but not least because of her decisions regarding refugees in 2015.
2. Armin Laschet is an exceptionally weak candidate — he's not a charismatic, persuasive campaigner, but he's also coming from a very weak position. Basically nobody wanted him as the CDU's candidate, almost everbody in the party as well as in the public preferred Markus Söder 1/
