#1 is something that debated by scholars (non-American scholars, for example of the British Empire, are more open a skeptical view of the Founder's motives). Scholarly debates should take place among scholars & Wilentz is too quick to assert that he is The Voice of History.

I should have been more agnostic about that. I haven't seen very convincing pushback to Wilentz. Hannah-Jones seems to have implicitly conceded. But I would be happy to hear counterpoint. These 'what was the motive?' questions typically have two sides or more.
