It’s so weird because it was two sentences in a very broad essay and wasn’t the central argument of the essay. There’s no way a horde of historians was intimidated into silence over that.
The lurkers support me in email “So why don’t they post?” you all cry They’re scared of your hostile intentions they’re not as courageous as I. Lurkers, lurkers, lurkers support me, you’ll see, you’ll see off in e-mail the lurkers support me, you’ll see (TTTO "My Bonnie")
All one has to do is ask around
I spent a fair bit of my life around academic historians and can safely say most don't share Sean Wilentz' view of the profession. I think there are a lot of criticisms to make of 1619 (particularly its nationalism) but Wilentz' hobbyhorses are pretty sprecialized.

In general this is a sound principle but many historians did disagree, quite loudly, with 1619.
Right, the fact that 1619 has been sparked a vast literature, pro and con, kind of goes against Wilentz claim.
Aside from the fact that there WAS substantial criticism of the 1619 Project on a number of fronts! Including from some of scholars whose work was drawn upon!
