Sontag was one of the very few public figures who kept her head in the aftermath to 9/11.https://twitter.com/dchiasso/status/1039570219612745728 …

There’s nothing in this statement that is remotely impressive. It’s basically Jeremiah Wright’s “the chickens have come home to roost” speech.

The fact that people still don't want to think seriously about foreign policy is proof that her statement is impressive.

I don’t find the “we deserved it” bit impressive.

      That's quite a misreading.

It's not "We deserved it" it's "this is the result of what we've been doing for the last 80 years". There's HUGE difference. Refusing to self reflect on how our policies contributed to the rise of these actors and simply reducing their actions to "cowardly Attacks on liberty" (1)

Serves no one. It simply silences any chance for true examination of what lead to the attack and gives license to those who wish to blindly retaliate. The result is 20 years of "war on terror" leading to 2 quagmires, Trillions of dollars wasted and Not much to show for it (2)

This was precisely the rhetorical trick that categorised the early years of the WoT. Any attempt to understand the reasons behind 9-11, treated as ‘you’re sympathising with the terrorists and blaming the victim’

How many times was I told ‘9-11 happened because the terrorists hate freedom’, and 20 years later we see the terrible fruit of our decision to deliberately avoid understanding.
