the UK is simply an institutionally transphobic country. All its institutions - formally public or not - tend towards anti-trans perspectives and it's really bloody weird. It does NOT reflect the general views of the public; polling shows that. It's an elite phenomenon.

Considering the direction British law has gone in on Trans issues, the UK in general has become pretty hostile to trans people. The media just happens to reflect that hostility.

I'm not sure what you think what the gotcha here is, but the fact that someone has been arrested does not mean that GuardianUS should not have reported on the hate mob that had been whipped up by the far right and resulted in fascist street violence against an LA business.
