In the 2010s, there was more or less a consensus that the neocons were no longer distinguishable from older strains of conservatism, both ideologically and functionally. I wonder if that conclusion is worth revisiting, especially in light of the concept of modernity.

I would argue that the paleo-con critique of the neo-cons made two arguments from origins: that the neo-cons were the bastard children of Trotskyism, and that they were Straussians. Both arguments were important, and both could point to exemplars. 1/

There were one or two points where these arguments converged (Bill Kristol was the son of an one-time Trotskyist and a Straussian), but for the most part, they operated on parallel tracks. 2/
