I don't think it's sufficiently understood that left/right polarization on abortion didn't intensify until late 1970s and 1980s. Before then, there were plenty of Margaret Sanger Republicans and also anti-abortion folks with New Deal politicshttps://twitter.com/ChrisBaylor5/status/1433836378769350659 …

Reminder of how things change on abortion, from my book First to the Party. NR's articulator of fusionism hadn't thought about the issue until a late stage. Buckley said readers were evenly divided in 1974. CPAC also divided. pic.twitter.com/Jh5Oo7RTRV

I read Jules Witcover's contemporaneous book about the 1976 election (Marathon) this year and it was really interesting how the Democratic primary kept getting derailed by conservatives in the party attacking abortion rights.

Isn’t the story of the rise of the religious right; first as a way to combat school integration (all white schools defended on grounds of religious freedom) and then repurposed as anti-choice advocates? My understanding is that abortion wasn’t talked about in Protestantism.

"What galvanized the Christian community was not abortion, school prayer, or the ERA. I am living witness to that because I was trying to get those people interested in those issues and I utterly failed.

As @SlacktivistFred puts it, Evangelical opposition to abortion is more recent than the Happy Meal. "God does not regard the fetus as a soul, no matter how far gestation has progressed." - Christianity Today, March 1979

If you are a Catholic over, say, 40, you knew a lot of genuinely cross-pressured anti-abortion liberals. I think at this point most people have resorted: Catholics for whom abortion was really salient got more conservative generally; liberals quietly shifted pro-choice.

Conciously or not, abortion was an effective wedge to split off a traditional New Deal liberal constituency.
