To Haass' list of wrongs, I'd add NATO enlargement, hyper-globalization, naive engagement in China, failed Middle East peace process, & dumb policy re Iran. Establishment got some big things right 1946-1950, and even 1988-92, but has been more wrong than right since 1993.

That's the way most realists look at it, but the Vietnam War is a major counterpoint. Totally insane, destructive, bad for US power and influence, many policymakers (Kissinger!) knew it at the time, but even so we won the Cold War a decade and a half later.
