I have been hearing from people who are more familiar with the inner world of the Claremont Institute than I am. It's been interesting. In that vein, I recommend this post by @lldzne, who did graduate work there alongside Anton and Ellmers in the 90s.https://lawrenceserewicz.wordpress.com/2021/08/31/what-laura-field-does-not-know-about-claremont-a-response/ …

I was largely focused on recording and demonstrating the decline, whereas
@lldzne traces out more of the causes. might be of interest to@AryehCW@HeerJeet@MatthewSitman@SamAdlerBell@DamonLinker@UrbanAchievr@RuleandRuin@jonathanchait@ThePlumLineGS@jktulis1 reply 0 retweets 8 likesShow this thread -

I enjoyed reading the piece, but I didn't find it very useful. Too internalist to that little world & too admiring of Jaffa (and Neumann lol). Jaffa became a crank decades before his death and set the stage for a lot of what we're seeing now in a way that the author doesn't see.

I'm still trying to process but broadly agree -- Jaffa's crankiness (coupled with real brilliance) was evident in 1960s/1970s. Not a far leap from his embrace of religous right to Claremont's Trumpism.

Once HJ is pronouncing America the "best regime" & attacking Allan Bloom for his homosexuality, he's a full-on crank in my book. & from my experience of knowing some of those folks in the 90s, they were always *very* right wing & disgusted by (not just critical of) lib modernity.

Yeah, it's hardly an accident that D'Souza was one of the very early Publius fellows.

I trust you are aware that Jaffa had little input on Publius Fellows since HJ was not running the CI nor was he involved in their day to day affairs.
