Suez was the final nail in the coffin for British ambitions as a great power; Eisenhower humiliated the British by showing who was in charge. Afg withdrawal: an end to a failed experiment.

That's the weird thing, is it not common wisdom in the UK/US that the Suez crisis was sparked by Eisenhower renegging on his promise for a loan to Nasser? It was wholly an own goal, which I guess Afghanistan is also so hrm

It's interesting to think of what could define the era that started with the fall of the Wall, and ended with the end of this war. Usually people talk about Sept 11 ending the era that started with the fall of the Wall.

As I recall (I was 2 at the time) the Suez crisis was a disaster for Britain, France and Israel. It was not a disaster for the US. In fact President Eisenhower pulled the plug on the whole thing.
