      1. Richard Haass is president of the Council on Foreign Relations, so he's as representative an avatar of the foreign policy establishment as you could want. And the line he's spinning here, which makes no sense, is the Blob's new talking point about Afghanistanpic.twitter.com/BG7uoWRxm6

      2. The idea that Afghanistan is in the same category as post-WWII Japan & Germany or post-1953 South Korea is belied by tens of thousands of dead civilians, insurgency, death squads etc. Also, even at most corrupt, J/G/SK had real governments. Afghanistan was a Potemkin regime

      3. The ridiculous Japan/Germany/South Korea line isn't about saying anything true or useful. It's a way to salvage the reputation of an establishment that, for 2 decades, lied about an unwinnable & unnecessary war. Same crew wishes we had an 'open ended presence' in Vietnam... They didn't win it, we just didn't have the stones to stay... Ugh. 🙄

The U.S. military presense in Okinowa, Japan is not particularly popular in Okinawa. Same goes for Jeju Island, South Korea. No matter how much influence the US has on the central governments of those countries.

That’s exactly right. I spent a lot of time at CFR in nyc and I can say the membership is not homogenous. Unfortunately blobophiles like Haas and Abrams rise to the top there bc they aggressively promote each other.

My latest for @TheProspect about the ongoing war whitewashing: "Too many Western journalists and analysts are contemptuous of and insensitive to the people of the country that the U.S. had invaded. Their eyes focus only on the violence of the “other”." https://prospect.org/world/whitewashing-of-the-afghan-war/ …

True, but still, if the US (and UK and France) would have left West Germany after 20 years in 1965 there would have been a guaranteed far right counter revolution or at least an attempt for one. 20 years simply isn't enough if you really want to change a country.

I guess they think the governments of Germany, Japan, and S. Korea would fall within a matter of days if we pulled out. Doesn’t say much for their grasp of foreign policy.

I happen to think the US is occupying those countries. 1. It definitely started as an occupation 2. Say which point did it stop being an occupation?
