I wonder how we're supposed to reconcile the chair's impassioned plea for the humanities at the end of the series with this claim that the only way to know literature is by keeping up with every single academic fad that's traipsed across the journals over the last 30 years.https://twitter.com/samuelmoyn/status/1430698275779354627 …

In my experience, this sort of religious devotion to academic trendology often goes hand in hand with the most blatant careeeerism, and hardly seems more elevated than the administrative cravenness and budget-bottom-line-ness that the show seeks to lampoon.

It depends whether you think these methodologies are mere fads or trends or products of serious debates within the discipline that its incumbent for practitioners to keep abreast of.

I have had my doubts about digital humanities and the new materialism but gotta say I did not expect to open up the Twitter box and see affect theory, ecocriticism, developments in gender studies and critical race theory (!!) dismissed as fads

The thing is even stuff that is faddish can make contributions and be part of larger debate within discipline. I mean I'm not a fan of 1970s quanto-history or psycho-history but they introduced important research/questions.

Fair enough, but calling things "fads" that have been around for 30-40 years is basically doing the Bruno Kirby limo driver bit in *This is Spinal Tap* telling us that rock is a passing thing
