I wonder how we're supposed to reconcile the chair's impassioned plea for the humanities at the end of the series with this claim that the only way to know literature is by keeping up with every single academic fad that's traipsed across the journals over the last 30 years.https://twitter.com/samuelmoyn/status/1430698275779354627 …

They are serious debates. But we aren't mathematicians that solve certain puzzles. Many methodologies in the study of literature fall out of fashion rather than are disproved.

That's fair. I think about how unfashionable Marxist criticism was in the 1950s and 1960s. But when it came back, it wasn't just a matter of fashion but of being revised to meet earlier critiques.

I have had my doubts about digital humanities and the new materialism but gotta say I did not expect to open up the Twitter box and see affect theory, ecocriticism, developments in gender studies and critical race theory (!!) dismissed as fads

The thing is even stuff that is faddish can make contributions and be part of larger debate within discipline. I mean I'm not a fan of 1970s quanto-history or psycho-history but they introduced important research/questions.

chomsky was right imo that all postmodern "innovations" in the humanities have no truth value, nothing there except performative obfuscation

right b/c conversely ive often felt that affect theory, along with the object relations that constitute affective experience in an embodied subject, represents a paradigm shift in the biosocial sciences which liberal social scientists are resisting for their own careerist reasons
