I think folks have grown up believing subtext was part of a bag of tricks created just to make art inaccessible to them. But it was often the product of sincere efforts to make people seem less like cardboard cutouts, and I hope we bring it back someday.https://www.gawker.com/culture/the-white-lotus-wasnt-a-bad-satire-it-was-just-a-bad-show …

It’s not an anachronism the movie is set “now.”.

My impression is that Stanford and other elite schools also got much more generous with financial aid to the extent that the whole plotline about the dad struggling to pay doesn't make much sense.
-
Also, why would the father sell his business to pay for year 2? What about year 3 and 4??

Ah, yes. There was only one summer blackout in NYC, and it happened 20 years ago. Very astute.

I think Dreamer as a term goes back to 2001 (failed) DREAM act, so I don't think it's strictly an anachronism. But there are later references to Justice Sotomayor and the screenwriters explicitly say the movie is set "now" so the power outage is fictionalized & moved.

I think the characters also have cell phones which affects how the night the blackout starts plays out. Iirc they actually updated the script so everyone having cell phones eliminates a problem people had in the Broadway version.
