2. The title and origins in chivalric romance might lead you to expect a rousing historical epic, but Green Knight offers a very cold, severe, distant past, a damp world lit only by fire, think Barry Lyndon.

3. Like some other recent films, Green Knight plays an insider/outsider game of trying to engage in film history (specifically Scorsese) while also reaching a wider audience. As Joker was to Taxi Driver, so Green Knight is to Last Temptation of Christ.

4. The movie is also pretty intertwinned with the source material, a strange chivalric anti-heroic story which is revises and expands upon. All of which is to say that its demanding in ways which might make it seem too cerebral and chilly, rather than engaging.

5. There's a lot to suss out in The Green Knight; a good movie to rewatch if you've enjoyed the first viewing. So I did a podcast with
@Jo_Livingstone who is super-good both because of her academic background (medievalist doctor!) and cultural criticism.https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/podcast-the-cinematic-middle-ages?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&utm_source=twitter …Show this thread

It’s an A24 movie. This happens with a lot of their movies. Audiences expect more of a genre movie and get an artier version than expected and some viewers dislike that

The disconnect between the trailers (fantasy action-adventure) and the film itself (meditative hero’s journey). Also worth noting that film buffs likely knew what they were in for given that it’s an A24 film. Average film goer not so much.
-
That’s a fair point. I’ve watched enough A24 films to know what to expect and I read a “prosification” of the original story in a children’s book when I was little, so I already knew not to expect any action at all.

It's a slow, contemplative movie that while being aeathetically captivating is completely devoid of action at a time when any movie with giants or monsters in it is a big budget Marvel film. It's not a mass market movie, by design.
-
The negative reviews I've seen all seem to be bemoaning any sort of flash or action sequences, which seems to me like people were somehow ill informed as to the style of film it would be, despite the trailers making it rather clear.
