This is a useful distinction. I recall being filled with foreboding and doubt about the Afghanistan war but being viscerally against the Iraq adventure. The two wars were treated differently even by opponents.https://twitter.com/zunguzungu/status/1426965905083310090 …

I remember being "against" the Afghanistan war for what little my opinion was worth formulating, but I also remember that there was no universe in which it didn't happen; the invasion of Iraq felt like there was some point in being against it, that it could be stopped

The second Hussein and bin Laden were dead the war was won. Now leave. I still don't hear that.

I think many felt destroying the Al-Qaeda training camps was justified. Staying there for 20 years, though, was not part of the deal.

At the beginning there was at least the possibility of the Afghanistan war being limited to a reasonable scope. Iraq was a neo-colonial nation building quagmire from the jump.

Maybe it’s just because I was a college kid but I was viscerally against both. It was obvious to me that nothing good would come of it.

After watching Russia's involvement in and pullout from Afghanistan, it was arrogant of the US to think it wouldn't be a slog. Either that, or a lot of people figured they'd make a lot of money.

Artlicle 5 demanded something, however noxious, or NATO was a dead letter. But Iraq was a sick crime from the very beginning.

Yes. I believed at the time that if we had not got sidetracked Iraq and executed a smart strategy in Afghanistan, we could have "won" and got out. Was that correct or even sorta correct, or just wrong? I don't think the Bush Admin could plan a parade, much less a war...
