This is exactly right. Saying "this is not a novel problem but a new manifestation of a recurring one" is not a bad argument for looking for novel solutions.https://twitter.com/courtneymilan/status/1425897300447006723 …

"This thing has been a problem since before America exists it, oh well, guess we shouldn't do anything about it"

In fact a historically recurring crises that has never gone away might perhaps be an ideal candidate for novel solutions, as the ones we've already tried clearly haven't worked.

I stopped reading Matty Y. some 13 years ago, and have yet to regret doing so.

this is why I stopped following Matt, he is intentionally being unclear in order to stir shit

That’s exactly why I did the same. He seems to have gotten worse over the past year. Every day brings a new take that seems specifically designed to piss people off, and then he spends the rest of the day acting like a very surprised victim of cancel culture. It’s a weird kink

Also a recurring crises can still be existential! So what if the country literally fought one of its bloodiest wars over this issue, the fact that it not new must mean its not a big deal.

Also I think the role of computer modeling makes Matty Y just outright wrong. There is no precedent by which racial disenfranchisement could be disguised as solely partisan and still be this effective.

There’s pretty solid science that says the gerrymander, while always contemptible, wasn’t actually that effective at swinging election results prior to 2010. Meanwhile, racial voter suppression was historically very effective, but also VERY conspicuous.
