People, it's not so hard to try to connect with the youngs by watching a few of the things THEY like on Netflix.
Or just save the pop culture references for twitter where they belong.
The larger problem is that thanks to media fragmentation there's really no pop culture reference you can make that most students would get. That's a change that started about 20 years ago.
Well, sure, there's no TV shows they all watch. But surely all the 18-year-olds will recognize my cutting-edge power point slides that use Distracted Boyfriend Meme and Unimpressed Mckayla Meme and Lolcats, right? RIGHT?
(Cue someone using the Anakin-Padme RIGHT? meme because the kids know memes, only to discover that the kids haven't watched those old Star Wars prequels.)
Groups of professors should share an undergrad “TA” whose primary job responsibility is to vet prepared lecture materials/attend class sessions and flag any references that didn’t work, along with suggesting current references where appropriate
Sort of like "sensitivity readers" in publishing. A pop culture reference reader. I like it.
