the fact that the founders dissolved a weak, decentralized confederacy of independent states in favor a federal union with a strong national government at the helm should be evidence that they might have held more nuanced views of our modern state.

I would add that prior to the rise of the welfare state in 20th century, the politics of "size of government" played out differently on political spectrum: that it was often business-oriented parties (Whigs, GOP) that wanted more robust state & (white) labor parities resisted.
