Whether it was sincere or not, he lost in 2020 because he treated Covid-19 like a liberal conspiracy theory that would eventually just reach a point where public interest completely evaporates. It *was* right after the first impeachment; he got cocky.

But key point IMO is this is mostly bottom-up/demand-driven. Limbaugh went on air in 1980-whatever and instantly had massive following. So neither is it necessarily that new.
