This article refers to French teens' attraction to Japanese manga. Japan, of course, has an equally rich tradition in sequential narrative art. So...I suppose the issue is that the kids aren't consuming enough Frenchy-French culture.
I think most American comic fans are reacting to the title in two ways: 1. What!?! They're wasting money on Spider-Bat comics!?! Harrumph!" 2. Snooty snobs like myself thinking, "Uh, but comics are awesome, and France has a lot of them. In fact, they fete them."
But from another angle... I have always loathed the idea that people need to find their way to "great" art, and if they don't find the "right" great art, there's something seriously wrong with them.
Not everyone will love what you love. This was a hard-learned lesson for me. Yet, I still try to write about the arts I love in such a way that shows people why they're, well, lovable. But there's an idea that making great works palatable somehow demeans them.
The specific French context is decades of nationalist angst about Manga (even manga made in France). The anti-manga campaign of Ségolène Royal is notorious, although widely believe to have cost her votes
