I think Sanders supporters underrate the extent the fact he called for a primary against Obama in 2012 and was a socialist who refused to call himself a Democrat alienated many partisan Democrats. Also, black voters in the south were as central to both losses as any age cohort.

It was treated as established fact by the entire media that, despite all polls to the contrary, Sanders would lose the general election. I think this more than anything doomed his chances. Older voters could not imagine him winning.
