It’s deeply historically ignorant in fantasizing about the only historical event he knows about to compare (wrongly), when our divisions are not by state interest (slavery) but the urban-rural/experienced class/racial/educational divides. Like the Gilded Age and Progressive Era.

And even on his own terms, it’s precisely because there are so many issues that divide us politically that we are actually knit closer together. The giant fault of slavery was what allowed it to become determinative of conflict.
