No, he’s never said that the groups themselves are fake. He says that they fake the grassroots part. Cosplay of grassroots activism. Simulacrum of grassroots activities. Real groups. Real activists. Real statements. But not grassroots at all.

Yglesias: "She very judiciously tries to point out that these groups are basically fake and there’s no reason to defer to them." Since he is citing someone he agrees with, he's saying these groups are basically fake.

Three things: 1) Eric Carlsen’s Curbing the Sphere seems to be engaging in some pretty blatant non-fair use copyright violation. 1/

          2) Matt appears to have edited “basically fake” to “not necessarily representative.” Compare your email to what’s posted online. https://www.slowboring.com/p/climate-left  (methinks that this kind of edit might deserve and editor’s note, or something, but it’s not entirely out of bounds.) 2/

          3) Most importantly, he does’t just characterize what she she is saying. He quotes her *immediately* after that sentence. And it’s clear in the quote that she is referring to how democratic/representative they are. His context makes this 100% clear, even in the original. 3/pic.twitter.com/hiGCVa1i9e

So, it’s clear in the longer piece and clear just in that paragraph that you quoted — even in the original — that he’s talking about whether they are really grass-roots or are merely speaking for themselves/their funders. 4/

What gets me, @HeerJeet, is that you seem to be intentionally quoting him out of context to misrepresent what he is saying. I didn’t know that YOU do that kind of thing. I’ve long thought you were pretty damn smart and high integrity.

ha ha! that's really funny that he silently edited it.

          1) Lots of things are silently edited all over the place. 2) He made the quote introduction more accurate and removed the chance of being accused of mischaracterizing the quote. It’s a venal sin, at worst.
