1. I hope people read this story beyond the narrow Trumpian and anti-Trumpian frame and see why it's suggests something distressing about American democracy.https://twitter.com/CNNPolitics/status/1415464394075607041 …

3. We need to consider what a massive failure of democracy it is that the USA got to the point where top military brass had to consider thwarting a coup. Some thoughts along this line here:https://jeetheer.substack.com/p/two-paths-to-a-military-coup?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&utm_source=twitter …

Isn’t it true for every government. What assumptions about the United States does this call into question for you?

The "we have all the guns" quote is chilling.

What other possible mechanism could there be? Ultimately it's the people with the guns who decide who's in charge. Maybe "official" command of the military should immediately transfer to the election winner.

Yeah. Can’t have a state without a military and a concentration of weapons and forces. Seems the lingering possibility of a military coup is really always going to be there.

I think the most distressing thing is that this is coming out six months later in a book from some palace courtier access journalists. Guess they’re getting paid though

All hot air and mental gymnastics until the rubber hits the road. They did what was correct in this situation. You operate within the rules given to you.

Given that any military has some capacity to execute a coup, it seems baked into the system (and most systems) that the military is also (hopefully) a bulwark against a coup.

Isn't that ultimately the only bulwark against a coup in every country? Institutions only have force to the extent that the people with the physical power are willing to uphold them.
