The new novel coming out this fall definitely falls into that queasy autofictional space, so it’s a relief to be working on something manifestly science fictional as a follow-up. No one’s gonna accuse me of stealing their experience scavenging the desert with a holographic wolf.

Wolfe's Book of the New Sun is about a far future earth dying earth full of aliens, robots & monsters. It's also about Wolfe's experiences in the Korean War.

That’s a fascinating point about Wolfe, and makes me wonder about how Severian’s supposedly perfect memory might be a metaphor for the experience of PTSD.
