Local cops for decades, rightfully, were perceived this way. There’s a great book out there for someone to write about the forces responsible for rehabilitating the image of police forced and shaping the current status quo version of cops as clean and the good guys.

It's interesting to watch Gray's views develop. Up to somewhere in the early 30s, he saw farm people as the salt of the earth, and after that time, they mostly become yokels, and Annie comments on their closed-mindedness and compares them unfavorably with city folks.
