1. One of the big differences between Canada & the USA is the relative salience of Indigenous issues. Canada has considerably more Indigenous per capita (especially if you consider only continental USA) & issues of treaty rights are more prominent.

5. This isn't just a story of past crimes but also about a vibrant, forward moving Indigenous political revival recovering its roots & also organizing on many fronts, including environmentalism. I talked to Indigenous scholar Sarah Nickel about thishttps://jeetheer.substack.com/p/podcast-mass-graves-and-indigenous?r=bh54&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email&utm_source=twitter …

Certainly depends on the region and city you live in. And of course Canada’s government has a high level portfolio for Indigenous issues. I worry deeply about the knowledge gap in the US re: Indian history, law, and culture (as Rick Santorum so embarrassingly made clear).
-
I also feel pretty strongly that the media
in the US has gotten much better at covering Indian Country. And reporters like @connie_walker shifting from@CBCNews to@Spotify just brings these stories to a much wider crowd.

I met educator in Scotland who claimed the whole RS concept began there. A fact an attempt was made to take the Gael out of Highland kids, ship them to penal schools to unlearn their culture & become happy little campers. Meanwhile their parents were moved off the land for sheep.
