Yikes! Glad I chanced upon Eric Foner in a used book store when I was a freshman in Sweden.
That's what I learned in the late 90s/early aughts.
North Korea has nothing on the US and its love of amnesia and pure propaganda.
My AP textbook uncritically referred to carpetbaggers and scalawags to explain and justify the south’s hostility to reconstruction.
Contrarian take: reconstruction, among other bad things, was taught in high school US history courses, but most people forget this because it is such awful subject matter.
It was taught but this is about *how* it’s taught. The correct way is to focus on the sustained white terrorism that undermined it, and I (& apparently others) were clearly not taught that.
Most of us weren’t in AP history tho.
When I was in high school, there were occasional references to the "first [x] since Reconstruction" but never, not once, was the term ever defined, much less explained
