"Wokeism is a religion" rubs me the wrong way because I don't share the New Atheist assumption that religions is inherently poisonous or discreditable. And in fact, liberal Protestantism was historically a huge force for abolition, civil rights and anti-racism in general.

The people who say 'wokeism is a religion' don't believe religions are poisonous. The opposite. They say wokeism is religion but in the service of a false God. Wokeism is the worst of both worlds, mimicking the conviction of religion but without transcendence, humility, or grace

Yes, but there's also clearly a line running from New Atheism to anti-wokeness, and in that line of argument the wokeness-is-religion claim is intended pejoratively.

Yes, some of the big anti-woke people clearly came out of New Atheism. That Conceptual James guy for example. If we see New Atheism was (in part) an imperialist project to justify GWOT, then it makes sense it would morph into rational for opposing domestic radicalism
