This all reminds me that I heard Bloom speak at Toronto right before Closing came out. He delivered the "rock" chapter. It was an electrifying performance, the audience was caught up in the audacity of the claims but also, in question period, mostly skeptical/hostile.

I had a prof at Ithaca College who was as much of a "Western Civ" booster as Bloom. I loaned him my copy of Closing, which I loved. His response: "In that chapter on rock music, he's being an old fuddy-duddy."

It's the weakest part of the book. I remember in Q&A period, a few people brought up fact that focusing on Stones (in 1987) was very dated and partial.
