Yeah, but its not like they were denying communion to Whigs and Republicans on policy grounds. The current situation seems like a real escalation.

Yeah, but the point of comparison with the current moment would be if the church tried to deny communion to Republican Catholics on policy ground. Which I don't think happened. The current move seems like a strong escalation.
