i think that's kind of incidental to my point. conservatives brand left ideas in a negative way all the time. see: 'socialism' or 'feminism.' but there's no misunderstanding about what they're talking about, because they're attacking a term with at least somewhat shared meaning

in this case, they did not have a term like socialism or feminism. they elevated a term to fill its place, and that term happens to describe something quite different and narrow--a legal academic theory. as a consequence, there has been a silly debate about the meaning of CRT

It's 100% a deliberate political operation that was ascendant through 2020. One early operator got a stipend while working on his book. I suspect Thiel was in the mix, but not much is out about it all
