Probably because so many respected outlets called it a conspiracy theory. The lab leak being true on its own isn’t a big deal but after all the pushback?
-
Because people conflate "lab leak" with "lab designed".

At first I thought "lab leak" meant a staffer at a world-class virology lab got sick and spread a novel coronavirus and it sucks and we should reform virology research worldwide. But I think it actually means some full blown (but ill-defined) sinister conspiracy to many folks.
-
Eh. The gravest realistic possibilities is not just that a specific lab had lax safety procedures but that virologists were doing unsafe gain of function research which we ought to reconsider allowing.
