Yep. Asymmetrical norm breaking is the fundamental dynamic.
For years and years I’ve been calling it the #RuthlessnessGap.

If Dems had rejected Thomas, they could’ve waited until after the ‘92 election to fill the seat. A 3rd Clinton justice would’ve ensured a 5-4 liberal majority for a generation. At the time, McConnell must’ve been chortling at the Dems’ ineptitude.

It astounds me watching the Democrats ignore how profoundly demoralizing this is for their own voters. By refusing to stick up for themselves it’s like they want to discourage their base and drive down their own turnout.

One of the worst parts is there are probably enough people who will believe it is normal to run roughshod over Democrats. Conversely, I hope like hell that it pisses of more Democrats and some that translates into positive action by elected ones. But, when will Democrats win?pic.twitter.com/MKeW6qNO67

Adding to
@jbouie ’s point, I recall Dem Senators insisting that Barrett’s sham confirmation was so insulting, such a cynical rejection of the GOP’s own made-up “rule,” that the gloves would be off in 2021. This never happened. -
If McConnell/GOP had “played nice” and not confirmed Barrett at the last minute, would Dems operate right now significantly differently?
